BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team got contributions from a large number of players, and those contributions added up to another career milestone for Falcon head coach Denise Van De Walle. Van De Walle picked up the 375th win of her career as the Falcons downed Oakland University in three games (30-17, 30-22, 30-22) at Anderson Arena Tuesday night (Sept. 16).
With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-3 overall, while the visiting Golden Grizzlies drop to 1-4 on the young season.
The Falcons got a balanced offensive effort, to say the least. Three players -- senior Samantha Rennau and juniors Melissa Mohr and Taylor Twite -- each had a hitting percentage of exactly .500 on the night. Rennau and Mohr had identical totals of 12 kills (tying for match honors), two errors and 20 total attempts, while Twite had 11 kills (11-3-16).
Freshman Chrissy Gothke kept up her defensive prowess with a match-high 14 digs, while senior Nadia Bedricky had 12 digs on the evening. Mohr led the Falcons with four total blocks, while senior Dana Chapman had a solo block and two block assists.
Setters Sara Sikorski and Amber Mareski each had success in the match, as Sikorski had 25 assists and Mareski 13. Sikorski also kept the Grizzlies off-balance all evening with her 'setter tips', and recorded five kills in the match.
OU's Sara Miller had a team-high eight kills on the night, while Lauren Bramos had 10 digs off the bench. The Grizzlies did have the advantage in the blocking department, 9-7, with Whitney Lane and Heather Lippert picking up seven and six block assists, respectively.
After several early ties in game one, the Falcons took an 8-4 lead. OU drew within three points at 11-8 before the Brown and Orange went on a 12-3 run to open a 23-11 advantage. Sikorski and Mohr each served four points during that stretch. The Golden Grizzlies would draw no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.
OU took an early 3-0 lead in game two, a game that featured eight ties. Chapman helped key a Falcon run midway through the match. With BG trailing, 11-10, the University of Michigan transfer had a kil to tie the game and teamed with Mohr for a block that gave the hosts a one-point lead.
The Grizzlies went on a 3-0 rally to tie the match at 18-all. Moments later, though, with BG up by a 23-21 count, a Rennau kill gave BG the serve, and Bedricky served five consecutive points. After an OU error, another Rennau kill gave the hosts a 26-21 lead and prompted an Oakland timeout. OU snapped the run at 6-0 with a kills to make the score 29-22, but a Twite kill ended the game.
OU again took an early lead in game three, but a 5-0 BG run gve the Falcons the lead for good. The visitors hung around, however, as the BG lead was never greater than three points until back-to-back OU attack errors made the Falcon margin 22-17. BG led by four points, 25-21, when a kill by redshirt junior Bridget Beers sparked a 4-0 run that led to match point. After a Falcon attack error briefly prolonged the contest, a kill by sophomore Emily Manser gave the Brown and Orange the win.
The Falcons do not have much time to savor the victory, as BGSU will come right back to Anderson Arena for a Wednesday night (Sept. 17) match vs. Valparaiso University. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
