Senior Gaby Coello, sophomore Heidi Romer and freshman Ashley Jakupcin all won a pair of singles matches Saturday to advance to the finals of their flights.
In the top flight, the final will pit a pair of sisters from Xavier, as Lauren and Kristen Clary will meet in Sunday action. For the Falcons, both senior Lisa Maloney and junior Susie Schoenberger dropped their respective opening matches, but rebounded with wins to set up an all-BGSU match in the finals of the back draw.
Coello lost a total of only five games in her two wins at the second flight. Coello downed Wright State's Laura Culbertson and XU's Stephanie Bauer, and will meet Xavier's Kate Weightman in the final. Weightman topped BG junior Cameron Benjamin in opening-round play, but Benjamin bested WSU's Audra Beckett to set up a meeting with Culbertson in the back draw final.
At flight number three, Jakupcin began her Falcon singles career with a 6-0, 6-0 win over WSU's Carla Haun, then topped Indiana State's Lisa Herndon in three sets in the second round. Jakupcin, a native of Dublin, Ohio, will meet XU's Emily Tuchscherer in the finals of the third flight. Falcon junior Laura Kokinda beat Ferris State's Allison Halbert in straight sets before losing to Tuchscherer. Kokinda will face Herndon in the match for third place Sunday.
Romer lost only two games to FSU's Jenna O'Dell at the fourth flight, then topped ISU's Logan Becker in three sets. Romer will face XU's Jackie Vilines in the finals. Vilines opened with a win over Falcon senior Jessica Johnson, before Johnson rebounded to beat WSU's Megan Laux in straight sets. Johnson will meet O'Dell in the finals of the back draw.
At the fifth flight, sophomore Andrea Meister bested WSU's Jennifer Bagby before losing to XU's Sarah Potts. Meister will meet FSU's Elena Blackman in the third-place match. Freshman Erica Wolfe began her BG singles career with a loss to XU's Kate Lohner, but responded with a win over WSU's Jennifer Beard in straight sets. Wolfe will face FSU's Nicole Berger in the back draw final.
In doubles, the Maloney/Schoenberger team won a first-round match at the top flight, while the tandem of Benjamin and Johnson suffered a loss. Both of BGSU's doubles teams (Meister/Romer and Kokinda/Jakupcin) were victorious at the second flight, while the Coello/Wolfe team lost in a third-flight match.
Sunday's (Sept. 28) action is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. at Keefe Courts. In the event of inclement weather, the invitational would be moved to Shadow Valley in Maumee.
