BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Junior Gaby Coello and freshman Ashley Jakupcin each won singles flight titles as the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team completed play in the BGSU Invitational Sunday (Sept. 28). The two-day, five-team tourney was held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
No team scores were kept in the invite, which included Ferris State University, Indiana State University, Wright State University and Xavier University in addition to the host Falcons.
Coello captured a flight championship for the second consecutive year, having won the title at the second flight Sunday, after winning the third-flight title last year. Jakupcin won this year's third-flight crown in her first weekend of collegiate competition.
XU won the other three singles titles and one doubles crown, while doubles teams from ISU and FSU each won a title.
At the top flight, XU's Lauren Clary topped her sister, Kristen, in the championship match. Falcon senior Lisa Maloney downed junior Susie Schoenberger in the fifth-place match (4-1, retired).
Coello lost a total of only nine games in sweeping six singles sets on the weekend. She downed XU's Kate Weightman by a 6-2, 6-2 score in the championship match. Teammate Cameron Benjamin finished fifth in the second singles flight.
At the third flight, Jakupcin capped her 3-0 singles weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 win over XU's Emily Tuchscherer in the title match. Teammate Laura Kokinda placed fourth in that flight.
XU's Jackie Vilines beat Falcon sophomore Heidi Romer in the championship match of the fourth flight, with both sets requiring a tiebreaker. BGSU senior Jessica Johnson recorded a 6-3, 7-5 win over FSU's Jenna O'Dell to win the back draw.
Xavier's Sarah Potts won the fifth flight with a three-set win over teammate Kate Lohner in the championship match. Falcon sophomore Andrea Meister finished fourth and freshman Erica Wolfe placed sixth in that flight.
In doubles action, the ISU team of Carolina Salinas and Leah Esmero posted a narrow, 8-6 win over BGSU's Maloney/Schoenberger team at the top flight. Falcons Benjamin and Johnson were eighth at the #1 doubles flight.
At the second level, XU's Lohner and Tuchscherer picked up the flight championship with a win over an ISU team in the final. BGSU's Romer/Meister team defeated the Kokinda/Jakupcin tandem in the third-place match, 8-6.
The FSU duo of Nicole Berger and Allison Halbert won the third-flight title, with the Coello/Wolfe team finishing third in the four-team bracket.
The Falcons return to action next weekend, heading to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Wolverine Fall Invitational. The three-day invite is scheduled to run from Friday through Sunday (Oct. 3-5).
