Peoria, Illinois - Senior Susie Norris pounded out 20 kills to go along with a .529 hitting percentage to help the Falcon volleyball squad to a three game sweep of Eastern Illinois (30-18, 30-26, 30-26) at the Mark Twain Hotel Invitational. The win improved the Falcons' overall record to 4-2.
BGSU captured a tournament title for the second time in as many weekends to begin the 2003 season.
After hitting a disappointing .192 in the morning match the Falcons rebounded nicely with a .384 team hitting percentage, led by Norris (.529), Nadia Bedricky (.444) and Bridget Beers (.833). Bedricky and Norris each were named to the all-tournament team
Chrissy Gothke had her third straight double digit dig performance with a team leading 14.
For the second consecutive week the Falcons compiled a 2-1 tournament record. Last week, BGSU finished the Boise Invitational with wins over Portland State and UVCS while dropping a match to the host school, Boise State.
Up next for the Falcons is the BGSU Invitational (Sept. 12-13). Joining the Falcons at Anderson Arena will be West Virginia, Murray State and Iowa State.
NOTES FROM THIS WEEKEND:
NORRIS REACHES MILESTONE With a 14 kill effort in the match versus UMBC, senior outside hitter Susie Norris eclipsed the 1,000 kill plateau. She is the 12th Falcon in school history to reach this mark. Norris is also in an elite group of seven Falcons in school history to reach both 1,000 kills and digs in her career.
FRESHMAN MAKES QUICK IMPACT The Falcons have found a new cog in their defense in freshman Chrissy Gothke. In the final match last weekend at the Boise Invitational versus UVCS Gothke made her presence known off the bench with a 14-dig performance. She followed that up with three straight double digits dig performance at the Bradley Invitational. For the tournament Gothke had 50 digs with zero errors.
