South Bend, Ind. - Notre Dame used two first-period goals to jump ahead of Bowling Green and added an insurance marker in the second period to upend the Falcons 3-0 in South Bend, Ind. on Saturday night. The Irish win split the weekend series and the four-game season series between the two schools.
"They (Notre Dame) did a good job on special teams of shutting our power play down," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "They were just much more thorough throughout the game on special teams. It was a broken-up game with all the special teams and we weren't able to get into any flow.
"I thought we had some good chances early and picked up where we left off last night early on. Their second goal kind of put us back on our heels."
The Falcons ended 0-for-7 on the power play after converting two extra-man markers the past two games. ND wasn't much better, finishing 1-for-9 on the power play. However, the Irish converted on just enough chances and had some luck go their way to register the win.
Jason Paige gave the home team the lead at 13:42 of the first period and Josh Sciba added to that lead less than two minutes later (15:31). The final goal of the game was on the power play and scored when Brett Lebda fired a slapshot into the Falcon zone and goalie Jordan Sigalet reached his stick out to stop it. The angle of Sigalet's stick, though, directed the puck into the back of his own net for a 3-0 Irish lead at 16:11 of the second period.
BGSU held a 15-9 shot advantage in the second period but trailed 40-32 in shots for the game.
Sigalet ended with 37 saves while David Brown collected his second shutout of BGSU this season with 32 stops.
BGSU falls to 5-11-6 overall and 3-8-3 in the CCHA. Notre Dame improves to 11-7-2 overall and 8-6-2 in league play. BGSU hosts Michigan State for a two-game set next weekend (Jan. 16-17) with both faceoffs scheduled for 7:05 p.m
