BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team got offensive Wednesday night (Jan. 14), posting an 85-48 win over the University of Akron in Mid-American Conference action at Anderson Arena.
With the win, the Falcons are 9-5 overall and 2-1 in MAC play, and BG has won five of the last six games. The visiting Zips drop to 5-9 and 0-3, respectively.
A pair of freshmen, Liz Honegger and Megan Thorburn, had double-doubles in the win. Honegger tied for team honors with 15 points, and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Thorburn had 14 points and a season-high 10 boards.
Two other Falcon starters were in double digits in the scoring column, as freshman Ali Mann tied Honegger with 15 points and senior Stefanie Wenzel added 12. Lori Krezeczowski was the lone UA player in double digits, with 14 points.
The Brown and Orange had a 52-30 rebounding advantage in the win, with BGSU players grabbing 22 offensive boards. The Falcons turned those rebounds into 24 second chance points (to Akron's 12).
BGSU never trailed in the game, and doubled up the Zips by a 46-23 score in the first half. The Falcons held a 24-18 rebounding advantage in the first half, but 12 of BG's boards came at the offensive end, leading to a 17-6 edge in second-chance points during that time. Honegger had six of those 12 offensive rebounds en route to 12 first-half points.
A 5-0 run in the early going -- a Honegger layup followed by a Mann three-point field goal -- gave the Falcons an 8-2 lead. The teams traded baskets before another BG run, this time a 10-0 surge, put the home team ahead, 22-7, midway through the half. UA's Jen Arnold scored the game's next five points to cut the lead to 10, but the Zips would get no closer.
Wenzel drained a three-pointer just after the eight-minute media timeout, sparking an 11-0 run. Senior Lindsay Austin and sophomore Jill Lause each hit triples during that time, sandwiched around a Thorburn jumper, and the Falcons led, 33-12, with five minutes to go before the break.
Up by 23 points at the half, the Falcons came out and scored the first eight points of the second stanza. That was the start of a 17-3 run to begin the half. When freshman Carin Horne converted a three-point play at the 11:55 mark, BGSU had a 39-point lead (69-30), the game's largest.
All 13 players on the Falcons' active roster saw action, with nine breaking into the scoring column. Horne had nine points off the bench, while Lause added a season-high seven. Austin also had seven points, along with a game-high eight assists.
In addition to her double-double, Honegger had game-best totals of four steals and four blocked shots. Her 5-for-7 night from the field included three three-pointers in four attempts. Mann went 2-for-2 from behind the arc, while Wenzel also made two treys as the Falcons went 9-for-27 from long range.
Overall, the Brown and Orange shot .493 from the field, while holding UA to a .310 success rate.
The Falcons are back home for a Saturday (Jan. 17) contest vs. Central Michigan University, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson.
