Akron, Ohio - Jon Mazur, who is 23 and a 1998 Springfield graduate, has been named the new football coach for the Spartans. Mazur was the school's freshman coach in 2003.
``We think he is a perfect role model and is going to be a great young coach,'' athletic director Ray Fowler said.
Mazur replaces Larry Murphy, who resigned after an 0-10 season in 2003 and a two-year mark of 2-18.
Mazur was an offensive and defensive lineman at Springfield, earning second-team All-Ohio honors in Division II as a senior.
He went on to be a four-year letterman as a center at Bowling Green and was a candidate for the Rimington Award which is given to the nation's top center in 2002.
