EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University tennis team lost for the first time in dual-match play this season, suffering a 6-1 road setback to Michigan State University Saturday (Jan. 24). The non-league contest was held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 1-2, while dropping the Falcons to 2-1 in dual play.
MSU climbed on top early by taking all three doubles matches for the first overall point. Caroline Lay and Keri Thompson combined for an 8-4 victory over senior Lisa Maloney and junior Susie Schoenberger at the top flight, while State's Sarah Andrews and Shelley Brady earned an 8-3 triumph against sophomores Andrea Meister and Heidi Romer. At flight number three, Jessica Baron and Pascale Schnitzer posted an 8-6 win against junior Cameron Benjamin and senior Jessica Johnson.
In singles play, Maloney picked up the Falcons' lone victory. The senior co-captain downed Brady in two narrow sets, 7-5 and 7-6.
Other Falcons in coach Penny Dean's Saturday singles lineup included Schoenberger at the top flight and Benjamin, Romer, Johnson and Meister at flights three through six, respectively.
The Falcons played without the services of several key players, including senior Gaby Coello, junior co-captain Laura Kokinda and freshman Ashley Jakupcin. BGSU will return to the courts with a Sunday (Jan. 25) dual vs. Youngstown State University. That match will begin at noon at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee.
