BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Western Michigan inside Anderson Arena Friday night (30-25, 30-19, 30-25). The loss drops the Falcons to 13-10, 6-5 MAC, while WMU climbs to 13-9, 7-4 MAC.
Game one could not have started much better for the Falcons as they stormed out to an early 12-5 advantage behind kills by Melissa Mohr, Maggie Karges and Stephanie Swiger. The Falcons maintained a comfortable lead at 19-15 following a Mohr kill, but that is where things got rocky. Behind eight BGSU errors, the Broncos closed out game one on a 15-6 run, capturing game one, 30-25.
"For the first 23 points, game one was the way BG plays volleyball," said head coach Denise Van De Walle. "After that our defense collapsed. We just did not dig enough balls."
Game two was basically all Western Michigan from the outset, as the Broncos raced out to a 10-6 lead and never looked backed. WMU used a game-high .282 hitting percentage, compared to a .054 for the Falcons, to secure game two, 30-19.
WMU came out of the locker room to begin game three with a force, in terms of a 22-6 run. Bowling Green nearly pulled off the comeback of a lifetime, starting with a 16-4 run to reach within four at 26-22, with the help of four kills by junior Emily Manser, but the comeback was not to be. A Bowling Green service error and a WMU kill ended game three, 30-25.
For the match Karges led the team with seven kills. Swiger and Mohr each chipped in with five. Mohr also led the team with five total blocks.
Defensively, Chrissy Gothke had a team-high 12 digs, arguably five or six of them were crowd pleasers. Karges, Nofzinger and Amber Mareski each added seven digs.
Shaylen Jackson and her 13 kills led Western Michigan. Abby Gephart (9), Kristy Ramsey (8), Tinesha Tierney (7) and Ashley Schatzle (7) also chipped in offensively.
Schea Fissel led the Broncos with 18 digs.
The Falcons will have little time to think about Friday night's loss as they play host to Eastern Michigan tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
