Falcon Women Place Fifth, Men 23rd at All-Ohio Meet

DELAWARE, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's cross country team placed fifth among 39 squads at the 50th Annual All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Meet Friday afternoon (Oct. 8). The Falcon men were 23rd among 39 schools at the meet, which was held at the Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio.
Individually, a pair of first-year Falcons paced their respective teams. Sophomore Rogers Kipchumba led the BG men, placing fifth in the 267-man race with a time of 26:03.3. Freshman Jamie Roflow was the top finisher for the women, ranking 16th among 273 runners in that race with a 18:58.2 clocking.
The BGSU women were fourth among 12 Division I teams, trailing Kent State, Ohio State and Miami. Overall, KSU beat OSU by just two points, 113-115, to win the meet. Malone had 137 points, with Miami just a point behind and the Falcons in fifth with 156 points.
The second finisher for the Falcons were senior Melissa Krueger, who placed 24th in a time of 19:15.3. Sophomore Kim Settle was 27th (19:16.9), while freshman Stephanie Hillman (39th, 19:27.0), soph Andrea Pollack (50th, 19:41.8) and senior Elise Gould (54th, 19:47.3).
All six BGSU runners finished between 11th and 36th among a total of 82 Division-I racers. The Falcons' seventh entrant, Niki Suitor, was among the team's top-four runners, but had to drop out of the race due to a leg cramp approximately a mile-and-a-half into the race. Overall, Cincinnati's Ruth Limo (18:08.8) was the race's individual winner.
For the men, after Kipchumba's fifth-place finish, the next runner to finish was sophomore Edwin Cheruiyot, who was 91st in a time of 28:16.3. Junior Bryan Jackson (112th, 28:34.9), freshman Ryan Rohrer (187th, 30:09.1 and senior Steve Vairetta (197th, 30:30.2) rounded out the Falcons' top-five finishers.
Freshmen Steve Ferber (200th, 30:36.1) and Will Elmore (201st, 30:37.0) also competed for the Brown and Orange.
Ohio State had four runners finish in the top eight to easily take the men's team title. The Buckeyes, led by individual winner Brian Oliver (25:28.5), had 38 points, well ahead of second-place Cincinnati (102).
The Falcons had a number of runners compete in the open races, including Aaron Smuda (50th, 29:50.4), Curtis Farnsel (74th, 30:26.8) and Jeremy Hartley (80th, 30:33.7) in the men's race and Christina Gingras (seventh, 20:24.9), Emily Jackson (15th, 20:54.4), Leslie Carden (26th, 21:16.3) and Angie Raizis (77th, 22:41.4) in the women's race.
The Falcons return home for the inaugural Falcon Invitational next weekend. The meet will be held Saturday (Oct. 16), with the men's race beginning at 9:45 a.m., with the women's race scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start. That race is the last tuneup before the Mid-American Conference Championships.
