TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team got back on the winning track Friday night with a four game victory over arch-rival Toledo inside Savage Hall (28-30, 30-17, 30-27, 30-22). The win gives the Falcons their second straight season sweep of the Rockets.
Senior Taylor Twite once again led the Falcons. She registered a team-high 19 kills and 20.5 points, as well as posted a .400 in the hitting department.
"This is a great win and great momentum builder heading into the match with Northern Illinois," said head coach Denise Van De Walle. "It is always tough to come into their [Toledo] arena and get a win."
The Falcons (10-7, 3-2) dug themselves an early 10-6 deficit to begin game one with several attack errors. The Rockets increased the lead to five, 19-14, even after a magnificent dig by freshman Maggie Karges combined with a Melissa Mohr / Stephanie Swiger block wowed the Savage Hall crowd. Following a BGSU timeout the Brown and Orange knotted the score at 21, but a small spurt by UT forced BGSU to use their final timeout at 27-25. Two Rocket kills ended game one, 30-28.
Game two was a much different story for BGSU. While in game one Bowling Green hit only .077, the second contest saw that percentage climb to.333. The Falcons opened up an 11-5 advantage and maintained that same lead at 17-11 to begin game two. Three straight UT attack errors gave the Falcons their largest lead of the game at 24-15 which was followed by a Rocket timeout. Toledo was unable to manage any sort of comeback as the Falcons cruised home with a 30-17 game two victory.
The Falcons came out of the locker room extremely flat to begin game three. Setting errors, missed digs and service errors spotted the Rockets an early 9-4 lead. UT (11-4, 1-4) stretched the lead to six, 21-15, following back-to-back BGSU errors, forcing a Falcon timeout. Bowling Green cut the lead in half with kills by Karges and Mohr, 26-23, and gained their first lead of game three after Swiger slammed home a kill, 28-27. A UT attack error, followed by a Mohr / Swiger block concluded a 15-6 run by the Falcons and a 30-27 game three comeback.
BGSU used a balanced attack to get off to a fast start to begin game four. Twite, Mohr, Karges and Emily Manser all registered kills to begin the final game. Twite's fifth kill of the game gave the Falcons an insurmountable 16-7 advantage. UT closed to within four points several times, but BGSU was unflappable. The Falcons walked home with a 30-22 game four victory and a 3-1 win over the Rockets.
"When you hit a .390 we can dominate the game," said Van De Walle. "That's the type of volleyball that is championship caliber."
Besides the 19 kills for Twite, Karges (15) and Mohr (12) also recorded double figures in the kills department.
Defensively, Emily Manser, who posted 14 digs, led the Falcons. Karges chipped in with 11, while freshman Elizabeth Simon recorded 10.
Mohr also posted a team-high seven total blocks, with Swiger (4) and Twite (3) also contributing along the net.
The Falcons will square off with Northern Illinois tomorrow night (Oct. 9) in Dekalb, Illinois. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
