DEKALB, Illinois - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team, behind a 22-kill performance by Taylor Twite, followed up the series sweep of the UT Rockets on Friday night by also downing the NIU Huskies in four game for the second time this season. The win improves the BGSU record to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
"What a great win," said Van De Walle. "We started slow in game one with our passing and defense, but once that picked up it was able to help our offense, especially in game four."
The NIU offense came to play to begin the match. In game one alone they hit .333 compared to a .188 for the Falcons. The Huskies opened up an 11-5 lead in game one and never looked back. BGSU got as close as 14-10, but another Northern Illinois run finished off the Falcons to begin the match, 30-21.
Game two was a much different story. The Falcon offense compiled 20 kills in game two alone, while only committing four attack errors. With two kills a piece early in game two, Twite and freshman Maggie Karges, helped BGSU to a 12-8 lead. NIU was finally able to pull even at 26-26, but kills by Amber Mareski and Melissa Mohr, combined with two NIU attack errors squared the match at one game apiece heading to the locker room.
BGSU dug themselves an early 10-6 deficit with four different errors to open game three. The Falcons used a 7-1 run to square the match at 13, but the Huskies once again put on a large run to regain the lead at 27-25. Following a Falcon timeout, junior Ashlei Nofzinger slammed home a kill, which was followed by a NIU attack error to knot the score at 27. The Falcon comeback was not done yet. Kills by Corrie Mills, Mareski and Twite closed the books on game three, 30-28.
A 6-4 run by NIU to open game four game the Huskies an early lead, but BGSU took back the lead at 8-7 and never trailed. Kills by Nofzinger and Mohr finished off the Huskies for a 30-24 final game score and a 3-1 victory over Northern Illinois.
"The three seniors had great leadership," said Van De Walle. "Amber [Mareski] had an all-around great game, while Taylor [Twite] and Mel [Mohr} did exactly what senior middle hitters should do."
For the match Twite led the team with 22 kills, but Karges (13), Mohr (10) and Mareski (9) also chipped in with kills.
Defensively Emily Manser led the group for the second consecutive match with 18 digs. Karges (12), Elizabeth Simon (9) and Chrissy Gothke (9) also got on the digs sheet.
Up next for the Falcons will be home matches versus Central Michigan (Oct. 14) and Ohio (Oct. 17). The match with CMU is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. while the Sunday showdown with the Bobcats begins at 2:00 p.m. and will be shown on BCSN.
