
Falcons Pound Out 67 Kills in 3-1 Win Over Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team downed Oakland University Wednesday night, 3-1 (30-16, 23-30, 30-23, 30-16) behind a .315 team hitting percentage. The Falcons had four players surpass the .400 hitting mark in the win.
Seniors Amber Mareski and Taylor Twite led the way offensively as Mareski hit .636 with seven kills, while Twite registered 17 kills and hit .424. Freshman Stephanie Swiger (eight kills and hit .583) and red-shirt freshman Corrie Mills (10 kills and hit .500) also led the offensive barrage.
"I was very impressed with our offense this evening," said head coach Denise Van De Walle. "Twite and Mills did an outstanding job in the middle, and I complement Corrie [Mills] for the way she helped off the bench. She carried us in game four."
The Falcons captured the opening stanza 30-16 posted 18 kills and hitting an even .500, while playing stellar defense versus the Grizzlies forcing them into a -.028. Twite and Emily Manser each hit .571 in the game with five kills apiece to lead the Falcons to the win.
Oakland turned the tables on Bowling Green in the second game, getting its offense going and out hitting the Falcons .270 to .067 to tie the match at a game apiece. Trailing by two at 17-15, Oakland broke the game open with six straight points, three on consecutive aces that put OU ahead to stay, capturing game two, 30-23.
Following the intermission, both teams played well, knotting the score at 18-18 midway through game three. But following a 7-1 by Bowling Green, the Falcons took a commanding 25-19 lead and never looked back. BGSU won game three, 30-23.
Game four was all Falcons as they posted a season-high 22 kills in the final game. After falling behind early the Grizzlies did reach within two at 17-15, but a 13-1 run to close out the match put a stop to any comeback, as the Falcons won game four, 30-16.
"All-in-all I am very happy with the way we played tonight," said Van De Walle. "Besides game two we played very well."
Sophomore Chrissy Gothke continued her hot stretch, registering 19 digs (72 digs in the last three matches) to lead the team. Manser (13) and Mareski (12) also chipped in defensively.
Up next for the Falcons will be their final two regular season matches of the 2004 season. They play host to both Marshall (Nov. 12) and Buffalo (Nov. 13) this weekend inside Anderson Arena. Both matches are slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
