PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, trailing the entire second half, never could get over the hump, and the result was a 68-63 loss at Duquesne University Saturday night (Nov. 27). The non-conference game was held at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
The Falcons and Dukes each now have records of 1-2 on the season.
For the Falcons, Ali Mann had a game-high 23 points, including 19 in the second half. The sophomore was the only BG player in double digits.
Loui Hall had 20 points to lead the hosts, while both Nicole Sinclair and Maria Stankevich each had double-doubles in the game. Sinclair had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Stankevich had 11 points and 11 boards.
The first half featured five ties and five lead changes. The teams were tied, 9-9, when a layup by senior Tene Lewis was followed by a three-pointer from sophomore Carin Horne. Those five points sparked a 9-2 run to put the Brown and Orange ahead by an 18-11 count.
With 8:20 left before the half, a trey by sophomore Liz Honegger gave the Falcons their largest lead of the game, at 23-15. Then, however, the Dukes scored the next 11 points, holding the Brown and Orange scoreless for over three minutes.
Lewis broke the scoring drought with a layup, and a free throw by junior Casey McDowell tied the score at 26-all with 4:33 left in the half. The Dukes forged ahead by two, but freshman Kate Achter scored the game's next four points, on a layup and a pair of free throws. Two McDowell charity tosses gave BG a 32-28 lead, but the hosts would score the final six points of the half to take a two-point lead into the lockerroom.
A Mann jumper tied the score with 30 seconds gone in the second half, but an Aiga Bautre three-pointer at the 19-minute mark gave the host school the lead for good. The Falcons battled back to within a single point twice within the next few minutes, but DU went on a 9-0 run to extend the lead to double digits.
The lead was still 10 points, at 50-40, with 11:54 left in the game, when the Falcon bench was whistled for a technical foul. DU's Bautre missed both of the ensuing free throws, however, and the technical seemed to spark the Brown and Orange.
The Falcons proceeded to go on a 10-2 run, with Mann scoring six of the Falcons' 10 points. Her third layup in that stretch cut the lead to 52-50 with 8:37 remaining.
BGSU would be within two points on no fewer than five more occasions, but never could get the tying or go-ahead basket. In one maddening stretch, BGSU had four consecutive possessions with a chance to cut into DU's 56-54 lead, but could not convert. BG missed six shots during that span.
Hall finally broke the scoreless stretch with a three-pointer for the hosts, but McDowell answered with a triple of her own just 15 seconds later, cutting the score to 59-57 with 2:34 left.
Again, Hall scored a bucket for the hosts, but Mann drew a foul on the Duquesne sophomore and made both free throws with 1:49 remaining.
The Falcons forced a missed shot, and Honegger grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 1:18 left. But, her free throw was off the mark, and BG was called for a foul on that rebound.
After a pair of Stankevich tosses restored DU's four-point lead, the Falcons again were called for a foul after a missed shot. This time, Stankevich missed her free-throw try, and the Falcons drew a Duke foul. But, BGSU missed a pair of free throws with 42.0 seconds remaining.
The Falcons fouled on the ensuing inbounds pass, and DU's Erin Crawford split her free throws with 39.3 seconds left. BGSU quickly responded with a Mann three-pointer with 26.0 seconds on the clock, cutting the lead to 64-62.
BGSU again fouled on the inbounds pass, and Crawford converted both free throws. After a BG turnover with 19.6 seconds left, Crawford again was fouled, and hit one of her shots from the stripe with 17.9 remaining.
Achter was fouled with 7.2 seconds left, and made one free throw, but BG could get no closer, and a Stankevich free throw provided the final margin.
The Falcons shot 30.9 percent from the field, and went 5-for-22 (22.7%) from three-point range. The hosts shot 39.3% from the floor and held a 52-38 advantage in the rebounding department.
BGSU committed only eight turnovers, while forcing DU into 16.
The Falcons return to Northwest Ohio to open the home portion of the schedule with Tuesday's (Nov. 30) contest vs. Youngstown State University. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena.
