KALAMAZOO, Michigan - The Men's soccer team took on #2 seeded Akron in the first round of MAC Tournament play. The tournament is being hosted by Western Michigan and all matches are being played at the WMU Soccer Complex.
The Falcons of Bowling Green went into this tournament to make their mark on the MAC as they put together a solid effort against the Zips.
Abiola Sandy led the Falcons with five shots on goal. Sandy had one strong shot midway through the second half that looked promising but was saved by Akron goalkeeper Justin Christafaris. He also hit one off the crossbar that was just off target.
Bowling Green held the Zips to a scoreless game throughout the first half and for most of the second. However, Akron had the upper hand as they were rewarded a penalty kick at the 61:03 mark. Taking the kick for the Zips was senior Alex Odwell. Odwell was able to net the ball passed Falcon goalkeeper Tyler Dollins and give Akron the 1-0 lead that in turn, gave them the victory.
This loss eliminates Bowling Green from the MAC Tournament. Akron will move on to play #6 seed Buffalo on Sunday at 2p.m.
