RedHawks Capture Saturday DH in Oxford
OXFORD, Ohio – Miami University held off a spirited seventh-inning rally by the Bowling Green State University softball team on Saturday (May 2), hanging on for a 3-2 win and a sweep of the teams' Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Miami Softball Stadium.
In the opener, the RedHawks (38-16, 19-8 MAC) picked up a 5-0 win.
Freshman Hannah Simko had two hits in each end of the doubleheader for the Falcons (20-29, 6-20 MAC), who see the 2026 season come to an end.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons had a one-out hit against MU starter Presley Hosick in each of the first two innings. Hannah Simko singled in the first, and Addie Martin doubled to the wall in center in the second. After Martin's hit, Cameron Kaufman scorched a ball to the right side, but it was caught by the first baseman.
• In the Miami first, the RedHawks scored a pair of unearned runs after the leadoff hitter, Bailey Manos, was awarded first base on catcher's interference. Mia Estrello and Danitza Hernandez followed with singles, with the latter hit scoring Manos, and Estrello would score on a groundout.
• Ella Carter led off the RedHawk second inning with a homer to give her team a 3-0 lead.
• Peyton Steffes drilled a ball to right for a one-out single in the third, and took off for second on the very next pitch. But, a strikeout and a ground ball to third ended the half-inning.
• McKenna Campbell and Erin Pinter had back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners with one out in the Miami third. But, on a double-steal attempt, Campbell was out at the plate, as catcher Ashley Chevalier applied the tag after a throw from second baseman Hannah Hunt.
• But, after a walk, Evey Dieudonne doubled to give the RedHawks a 4-0 lead. On the play, it was originally ruled a two-run double as Carter was called safe on a play at the plate. But, after review, Carter was ruled out, for the second putout at home of the inning.
• Miami got back-to-back singles to begin the fourth, but Morgan Beckham replaced Mackenzie Krafcik in the circle and got a force play at third before striking out Hernandez for the second out. Then, the sophomore induced Katy Olive into a lazy popup that was caught by left fielder Kendall Mathews.
• Simko lined a ball down the left-field line and slid into second for a one-out double in the fifth, and the freshman reached third on a groundout. But, Chevalier's liner was speared by second baseman Estrello for the third out.
• MU added to the lead in the sixth. Manos led off with a single, and continued all the way to third on an outfield error. She wouls score on a sac fly off the bat of Hernandez.
• Hunt singled to begin the seventh, but Hosick and the RedHawks were able to close out the shutout win.
• Hosick allowed five hits in her complete-game win, striking out three without walking a batter. For the Falcons, Krafcik allowed four runs (just two earned) in three innings, while Beckham also pitched three innings and allowed just one hit. The lone run Beckham surrendered was unearned.
• At the plate, Manos went 3-for-3 to pate the RedHawks, while Simko was 2-for-3 for the Falcons.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Miami pitching did not issue a walk in the first game of the day, but both Steffes and Chevalier worked MU starter Lea Chevrier for free passes in the first inning of Saturday's second game. Chevrier threw just 10 of her 24 pitches for strikes in the frame, but struck out the final two hitters she faced to keep the game scoreless.
• Manos and Estrello began the MU first with back-to-back singles, but the Falcons got three outs on two pitches. Hernandez hit a ball to the left side, and third baseman Taylor Behrendt fielded it, stepped on the bag and threw to Kaufman at first. Then, Campbell's fly ball to center ended the inning.
• In the Miami third, a leadoff hit was erased by a 1-4-3 double play on the very next pitch, as Madison Wendel fielded a ground ball off the bat of Madie Patton. After needing just seven pitches to get through the second inning, Wendel got the Falcons back into the dugout after just four pitches in the third.
• Through three innings, Wendel had thrown just 23 pitches – 19 for strikes – while Chevrier had thrown 48 (26 for strikes).
• In the fourth, Estrello led off with a single, and Hernandez hit a ball that went just inside the third-base bag and rolled down the left-field line for a double that put two runners in scoring position.
• Campbell followed with a grounder, and Estrello beat the throw to the plate, scoring a run on the fielder's choice to give the RedHawks the lead. Dieudonne's fly ball to right allowed Hernandez to tag and score.
• Despite the pitch disparity, Chevrier was still working on a no-hitter. Following the walk to Chevalier in the first inning, she retired 11 in a row before issuing a four-pitch walk to Behrendt to begin the fifth. After a fielder's choice produced the first out, Mathews hit a scorcher that was right at shortstop Hernandez. Kaufman then stole second, but a strikeout ended the inning.
• Simko ended Chevrier's no-hit bid with a one-out double in the sixth, as her hard-hit ball went down the right-field line. With two outs, Hunt singled to right, with Simko scoring from second to cut the Miami lead in half. Initially, Simko was ruled out on a close play at the plate, but after a lengthy review, the call was reversed, as Simko made a headfirst slide to touch the plate with her left hand before Campbell's tag.
• Martin drew a walk to put runners at first and second, but Chevrier got a strikeout to end the threat.
• MU answered in the bottom of the sixth with what proved to be a very important run. Hernandez walked, took second on a ground ball to the right side and scored on Carter's double to right.
• In the seventh, Kaufman led off with a single, and continued to second when the throw to first was wild. Mathews followed with a sharp single to put runners at the corners.
• Massaro's RBI single cut the Miami lead to a single run. She was erased on a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning, but Simko beat out a slow roller to second to put runners at first and second. But, Chevrier was able to get a ground ball to the right side, with first baseman Carter flipping the ball to Estrello covering first for the final out.
• Simko had her second two-hit game of the day, scoring a run, while four of her teammates had one hit apiece.
• Chevrier picked up the complete-game win for the hosts, allowing two runs and six hits. She walked four Falcons and struck out seven. Chevrier threw 116 pitches in the contest.
• Wendel suffered the loss, allowing two runs and six hits through four innings. Beckham allowed a run in an inning and two-thirds, while Krafcik got the final out of the sixth. BGSU pitchers combined to throw 79 pitches, including 51 strikes, in six innings.
