Heffernan Tosses 5.2 Innings Before First Hit Allowed

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team evened the weekend series against Eastern Michigan with a 2-1 victory on Saturday (May 2). The Falcons were led by Andrew Heffernan on the mound, allowing just one unearned run through eight innings of work. Heffernan also carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He handed the ball off to Ty Roder in the ninth with Roder striking out all three Eagles he faced to secure the save. As for runs, the Falcons scored one in the first and one in the ninth to bookend the game for the 2-1 victory. BGSU and EMU will finish the series on Sunday (May 3) with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons struck first. Anthony Mitta drew a two-out walk in the first before coming all the way around to score on an Andrew DiLodovico double to left for a 1-0 advantage.
Bowling Green threatened a two-out rally in the third. Lance Vickers singled into left and stole second followed by Mitta drawing a HBP, but Eastern Michigan worked out of the frame.
On the mound, Andrew Heffernan carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning with Eastern Michigan's first hit coming with two outs in the sixth via a single up the middle.
In the seventh, Eastern Michigan tallied an unearned run on a throwing error for a 1-1 score.
Bowling Green worked in front in the ninth. DiLodovico was hit by a pitch and TJ Takats legged out an infield single to put two on. A throwing error on a pickoff moved both runners up. BGSU attempted a squeeze, but was unsuccessful. However, an infield single from Carter Mottice followed and was enough to score Takats for a 2-1 BGSU advantage.

FALCON STAT FACTS

Andrew Heffernan manned the mound for a season-best eight innings for the Falcons, allowing just three hits and one unearned run on his way to his third win of the season with all three wins coming since April 3. Heffernan also maintained a no-hitter through 5.2 innings of work.
The save for Ty Roder marked his first of the season and the second of his BGSU career after logging one last year. Roder struck out all three batters he faced, his fifth outing of the year with three or more strikeouts.
Lance Vickers tallied a hit for the Falcons giving him a knock in five of the last six games. Vickers also stole his eighth base of the season with four of those coming in the last six games.
