BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team won the doubles point to open the match, then split the singles contests en route to a 4-3 win over the University of Illinois at Chicago Friday night (Feb. 13). The non-conference dual match was held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 5-3 in dual play this season, and BGSU broke a two-match losing streak. The Falcons are now 5-1 in home matches, including a 3-1 mark in dual-match play at Shadow Valley over the last three weekends.
BGSU began the evening by winning the doubles point. Senior Lisa Maloney and junior Susie Schoenberger set the tone with an 8-2 win at the top flight, while the sophomore duo of Andrea Meister and Heidi Romer picked up an 8-6 victory at the third level.
After staking themselves to the early 1-0 lead, the Falcons needed only to split the six singles matches, nad the Falcons did exactly that. Maloney downed Iris Jaklin in straight sets at the second flight, winning a second-set tiebreaker to close out the match.
Romer battled back from a first-set loss to Molly Smith, downing her Flames opponent by winning the final two sets at the fifth flight. Jakupcin posted a straight-sets win at the sixth level to keep pace with Romer in singles wins this year. Jakupcin is now 13-2 in singles play this year, while Romer also has 13 singles victories (13-6) to tie for the team lead. Jakupcin is a perfect 5-0 in dual-match singles play.
The Falcons will return to the court on Sat., Feb. 21, with a 6:00 p.m. match at Indiana State. That match begins a streak of eight consecutive matches away from home, as the Falcons are not scheduled to be home again until April 2.
