
Falcons Fall To Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Michigan - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team dropped a 194.475-194.375 decision to the University of Western Michigan Sunday afternoon inside University Arena. In the loss, senior co-captain Melissa Popovich captured first place on the floor, bars and all-around events.
The Falcons now sit at 4-4 overall and 2-1 in MAC action, while Western Michigan recorded their first win of the season, and now sit at 1-9 overall and 1-2 in conference.
By claiming four of the top six finishes on the vault, the Brown & Orange were able to establish a new season-best in the event with a team total of 48.650. Popovich placed second (9.900), with Pia Sjovall and Breanne Metzger recording 9.800's, placing fourth and Kristin DiPietro placing sixth with a 9.700.
The Falcons continued establishing new team-bests with a team total 48.650 on the balance beam. Sjovall placed first in the event with a 9.900, while Metzger placed second with a 9.825.
BGSU took home the top two spots on the uneven bars with a first-place tie by Popovich and junior Kari Elste. They both recorded a 9.875. Marie-Eve Boisvert placed fourth with a 9.800.
On the floor exercise the Falcons recorded a 48.525 as a team, helped mostly by Popovich's 9.925, taking home her third first-place finish. Sjovall recorded a 9.750 to place seventh, followed by freshman Allison Swafford and her 9.700.
Up next for the Falcons is a trip to conference leading, Kent State on Friday, February 20. The meet is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
