BGSU Bounces Back, Beats Butler Bulldogs

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - For the second-straight day, the Bowling Green State University tennis team dropped the doubles point. On Sunday (Feb. 22), however, the Falcons rallied to take a majority of the singles points and capture the match. BGSU picked up a 5-2 victory at Butler University.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 6-4 in dual-match play this season, while dropping the Bulldogs to 5-4 on the year.
The hosts picked up a pair of doubles wins to take the point. BGSU's lone winning team was comprised of junior Cameron Benjamin, an Indianapolis native, along with freshman Ashley Jakupcin. The Falcon duo blanked BU's Annie Gantz and Kaitlin Elliot by an 8-0 score at the third flight.
Sophomores Heidi Romer and Andrea Meister lost a close match at the second flight, falling by an 8-6 score.
In singles, however, BGSU won five of the six matches. Junior Susie Schoenberger rallied from an opening-set loss for a three-set victory over Christina Laun at the top flight, in the lone match to require more than two sets.
Senior Lisa Maloney lost only four total games in her win at the second flight, while Jakupcin duplicated that feat at the fifth level. Benjamin did them one better in her hometown, losing a total of only three games in her fourth-flight win over BU's Shaden Dowiatt.
Senior Jessica Johnson rounded out the Falcons' singles winners, topping Elliot at flight number six.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean now prepare to begin Mid-American Conference play. BGSU will head to New York for a Friday (Feb. 27) match at Buffalo, then will meet Akron in a neutral-site match the next day. The BGSU-UA contest is slated to be played in Lexington, Ohio.
