BGSU Beats Buffalo, 4-3

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Bowling Green State University tennis team opened Mid-American Conference play on a successful note, downing the University at Buffalo, 4-3, Friday afternoon (Feb. 27). The match was held at the Village Glen Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in MAC play, while dropping the Bulls to 4-3 and 0-1, respectively.
The Falcons opened the day's action by taking the doubles point. A pair of BGSU teams captured identical 8-4 wins at the second and third flights. Freshman Ashley Jakupcin and sophomore Heidi Romer teamed up to defeat UB's Lisa Wittman and Erica Zielinski at the second level. In the third-flight match, the Falcons got a victory from junior Cameron Benjamin and senior Jessica Johnson.
UB's top-flight team of Miglena Nenova and Kristen Ortman got a win over junior Susie Schoenberger and sophomore Andrea Meister.
In singles play, the Bulls took the top three spots, but the Falcons got victories at each of the fourth through sixth flights. Jakupcin and Meister each lost only one game in their respective straight-sets wins. Jakupcin topped Sheri Ugowski at the fourth flight, while Meister bested Zielinski at the fifth level.
BGSU's other win came at the sixth flight, where Johnson posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over UB's Onessa Williams.
The Falcons will return to the state of Ohio for a neutral-site match Saturday afternoon (Feb. 28) vs. the University of Akron. That MAC contest will be held in Lexington, Ohio.
