LEXINGTON, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team moved to 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play with a 6-1 win over the University of Akron Saturday evening (Feb. 28). The neutral-site match was held in Lexington, Ohio.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in MAC action, and BGSU has won three consecutive matches. The Zips fall to 6-3 and 0-2, respectively.
The Falcons took an early lead by winning the doubles point. The Zips captured the match at the top flight, but BGSU's second-flight team of sophomores Heidi Romer and Andrea Meister picked up an 8-6 win. At the third flight, Falcon junior Cameron Benjamin teamed with freshman Ashley Jakupcin for an 8-3 win over their Akron foes.
In singles, the Falcons won five of the six matches, four in straight sets. Maloney lost only one total game, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over UA's Diana Serafini at the second flight. Romer picked up a three-set win over Jenna Larson at the third level, while Jakupcin swept Courtney Brenkus at flight number four.
Benjamin and senior Jessica Johnson swept their UA opponents at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Benjamin lost only five total games, while Johnson dropped only three.
Akron's lone win came at the top flight, where Irina Strembitsky downed junior Susie Schoenberger in a three-set match.
The Falcons are idle until March 19, when BGSU will take on UNLV in Las Vegas.
