BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team, with a season-high score, defeated Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon inside the Eppler Center, 195.175-194.400. With the win BGSU improves to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in Mid-American Conference action.
BGSU opened action versus the Huskies on the vault, where they were led by senior co-captain Pia Sjovall's 9.775. Juniors Kristin DiPietro and Breanne Metzger tied for fourth with a 9.750.
The Falcons then moved over to the uneven bars where they established a new season-best score of 49.000. The Brown & Orange captured three of the top four spots with a 9.900 by senior Melissa Popovich, 9.875 by junior Kari Elste and 9.800 by sophomore Marie-Eve Boisvert.
Up next was the balance beam, where Popovich and Metzger took home the top two spots. Popovich placed first with a 9.850, while Metzger collected a 9.800 to place second.
With a combined score of 49.425, the Falcons continued establishing new season-bests by capturing four of the top five spots on the floor exercise. Popovich and Sjovall each scored 9.950's, placing first, while DiPietro and Metzger tied for fourth with a 9.850.
In the all-around Popovich recorded her sixth score of 39.000 or higher, by posting a second-place finishing score of 39.075 versus the Huskies.
The Falcons return to action next Sunday afternoon, March 7, when they host Central Michigan on Senior Day.
