BGSU Falls To MTSU, 4-3

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Bowling Green State University tennis team came up just short against Middle Tennessee State University, dropping a 4-3 decision Sunday (March 21). The neutral-site match was held in Las Vegas, Nev.
With the win, the Lady Raiders improve to 9-5 on the season, with all five losses coming to nationally-ranked teams. The Falcons drop to 8-6 in dual-match play.
MTSU swept the doubles matches, but all three contests were relatively close. BGSU senior Lisa Maloney and junior Susie Schoenberger battled the 22nd-ranked doubles team in the nation, Manon Kruse and Carien Venter, before falling by an 8-4 score.
At the middle flight, sophomores Heidi Romer and Andrea Meister lost by an 8-6 count, while junior Cameron Benjamin and freshman Ashley Jakupcin dropped an 8-5 decision at the third level.
In singles action, the Falcons and Lady Raiders split the six matches, with BGSU competitors taking the bottom three flights. At the top-two flights, nationally-ranked Raider players posted wins. Kruse, ranked 55th in the nation, topped Schoenberger at the top flight, while the 100th-ranked Klaschka downed Maloney at the second level.
Jakupcin posted a convincing victory over Emily Vest at the fourth flight. The Falcon freshman is now 18-3 in singles play this year, including 10-1 in dual-match action.
Benjamin picked up a fifth-flight win over Laura McNamara, while senior Jessica Johnson swept Jacqui Williams at the sixth level.
BGSU now returns to Mid-American Conference play with a pair of road matches this weekend. The Falcons will head to Eastern Michigan for a Friday (March 26) match, before taking on Toledo in the Glass City the next day.
