TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team improved to 3-1 in Mid-American Conference play this season, picking up a 4-3 road win over the arch-rival University of Toledo Saturday afternoon (March 27). The match was held at the UT Tennis Courts.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 9-7 overall, and BGSU snaps a three-match losing streak. The Rockets drop to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in the MAC.
BGSU opened the day's action by winning the doubles point, a point that would prove to be crucial. Senior Lisa Maloney teamed with junior Susie Schoenberger for an 8-2 win over the Rockets' Myriam Cuerva and Eunice Paravicini at the top flight. UT's duo of Jen Meister and Monica Ribero picked up an 8-4 victory over junior Cameron Benjamin and freshman Ashley Jakupcin at flight number two, but BGSU's sophomore team of Heidi Romer and Andrea Meister -- Jen's sister -- were victorious at the third flight.
The two teams split the six singles matches, with the Rockets winning at the top-three flights, but BGSU capturing flights four through six. Romer lost just six games in her fourth-level win, while Benjamin dropped a total of only four games in her fifth-flight win over Dani Moran. Meister also won in straight sets, topping Claire Smalley at the sixth flight.
The Falcons now return home for the first time since mid-February. After playing eight-straight matches away from home, BGSU will host Western Michigan Friday (Apr. 2) afternoon. Weather permitting, that match will be held at Keefe Courts, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Then, the Falcons continue a four-match homestand with a Saturday (Apr. 3) contest vs. Northern Illinois. That match also is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe.
