TOLEDO, Ohio - Western Michigan University won at all six singles flights to complete a 7-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday afternoon (April 2). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
With the victory, the Broncos improve to 11-7 in dual-match play this season, and the Broncos remain unbeaten in MAC action with a 4-0 league record. Western has won six consecutive matches.
The Falcons drop to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in league action.
With junior Susie Schoenberger out of the lineup and senior Gaby Coello and junior Laura Kokinda unavailable due to injuries, coach Penny Dean was forced to adjust her lineup. Schoenberger, who had played at the top singles flight for each of the last 15 dual matches, is in Washington, D.C., this weekend, representing the state of Ohio at the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
Schoenberger had also played at the top doubles flight in 15 of the Falcons' 16 dual matches prior to Friday. With Schoenberger unavailable, senior co-captain Lisa Maloney was joined at the number-one doubles flight by classmate Jessica Johnson. That duo performed well against the Broncos' top team of Frederika Girsang and Valeria Stoilova, before falling by a 9-7 score.
The second-flight duo of junior Cameron Benjamin and Ashley Jakupcin lost to WMU's Rattiya Hiranrat and Melana Remynse, 8-4, while Falcon sophomores Heidi Romer and Andrea Meister were defeated by Maelynn Bernosky and Carrie Jeanmaire at the third level.
In singles action, Maloney moved up to the top flight, but was defeated by Girsang. BGSU's lineup also included, in order, Jakupcin, Romer, Benjamin, Meister and Johnson.
The Brown and Orange will look to get back to winning ways Saturday (April 3), when BG continues a four-match homestand with a MAC dual vs. Northern Illinois University. NIU will enter Saturday action with an overall record of 6-6 and a MAC mark of 2-2, after a 4-3 loss at Ball State Friday.
The BGSU-NIU match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Keefe Courts, weather permitting. Shadow Valley again will be the site of the match in the event of wind and/or inclement weather.
