Buffalo, N.Y. - Bowling Green pitcher Tyler Johnson made just two bad pitches all day while the Falcons scored eight runs to defeat Buffalo, 8-5, in New York. All five Bulls runs came on a solo home run by Chris McGraw in the fourth inning and a grand slam by David Amaro in the fifth inning. Other than that, Falcon pitchers held their own against Buffalo.
Tyler Johnson pitched the opening 4.2 innings and allowed five runs (one earned), making just two mistake pitches to McGraw and Amaro. He allowed six hits while walking two and striking out four.
Junior Matt Hundley (3-0) picked up his third win of the season by entering in relief of Johnson and pitching 3.1 scoreless innings. The righthander gave up three hits with no walks, no runs and three strikeouts. Senior Neil Schmitz pitched a perfect ninth inning (two strikeouts) with a three-run lead to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Offensively, the Falcons used three-run innings in the second and fifth frames to stake a 6-5 lead. One insurance run came in the sixth inning via a bases-loaded walk issued to Tyler Wasserman which brought home Nolan Reimold. The eighth and final insurance run came in the eighth inning when Kevin Longstreth doubled home pinch-runner Dash Yost from second base.
Junior Jeff Warnock was 3-for-3 with a run scored while also laying down two sacrifice bunts which resulted in BGSU runs. David Barkholz (2-for-5) and Longstreth (2-for-3) also had multiple hits.
BGSU improves to 15-7 overall and 4-4 in the MAC. Buffalo drops to 7-19 overall and 1-3 in the MAC. The two teams conclude their three-game series in upstate New York on Easter Sunday at 1 p.m.
