BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Defending Mid-American Conference champion Marshall University posted a 7-0 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Saturday afternoon (April 10), in the Falcons' final home match of the season. The dual was held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
With the win, the Thundering Herd, ranked 46th in the nation in the latest ITA poll, improves to 17-4 overall and 7-0 in MAC play, while the Falcons are now 9-11 and 3-5, respectively.
The match marked the final home action for the Falcons' three seniors, co-captain Lisa Maloney, Gaby Coello and Jessica Johnson. The three were recognized prior to the match.
The Herd took the doubles point to open the match. The team of Jess Johnson and Ashley Kroh, ranked 28th in the country, downed Maloney and junior Susie Schoenberger at the top flight by an 8-2 count. MU's Alice Sukner and Lille Nzudie won by the same score over junior Cameron Benjamin and sophomore Heidi Romer at the second level, while seniors Coello and Johnson lost to their Marshall foes at the third flight.
In singles play, sophomore Andrea Meister extended her opponent, Danielle Hock, to a third set before succumbing at the sixth flight. Falcon freshman Ashley Jakupcin lost in two sets to Nzudie at the fourth level, but both sets ended in 7-6 scores.
Schoenberger lost to MU's Johnson at the top flight, while the Herd's Sukner topped Maloney at the second flight. In third-flight action, Kroh came out on top of a battle with Coello, while Joelle Good downed Benjamin in their fifth-flight match.
The Brown and Orange will step outside of MAC play for a Tuesday (April 13) match at Xavier, before closing the regular season with a Saturday (April 17) contest at Ball State. Then, the Falcons will travel to DeKalb, Ill., for the MAC Championships from April 22-25.
If the Falcons win at BSU, BGSU will tie for sixth place in the MAC regular-season standings with the Cardinals. Should the Falcons win that match, BGSU would earn the sixth seed for the MAC Championships and a bye into the quarterfinal round. A BSU win would make the Falcons the seventh seed for the league championships. The current MAC standings are listed below.
