FAIRFIELD, Ohio - Host Xavier University won the doubles point, then took five of the six singles matches en route to a 6-1 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Tuesday afternoon (April 13). The non-conference dual match was held at the Mercy HealthPlex in Fairfield.
With the victory, the host Musketeers improve to 19-3 in dual-match play this season, while the Falcons fall to 9-12.
In doubles action, the hosts won at the top-two flights, with Lauren Clary and Stephanie Bauer winning a narrow 8-6 decision over senior Lisa Maloney and junior Susie Schoenberger at the number-one flight.
At the second flight, XU's team downed the duo of sophomore Heidi Romer and freshman Ashley Jakupcin. BGSU's third-flight team of senior Gaby Coello and soph Andrea Meister picked up an 8-5 victory over their Xavier foes.
In singles action, Jakupcin picked up a win over Kate Weightman, as the two split their first two sets before Jakupcin captured a tiebreaker set. Jakupcin's win was her team-high 19th singles victory this year. With 30 overall victories, she is one behind Romer for the team lead.
Schoenberger and Maloney competed at the top two flights for the Falcons, with Maloney losing her opening set in a narrow tiebreaker.
Coello (third flight), Romer (fifth) and junior Cameron Benjamin (sixth) rounded out the BGSU lineup. Romer extended XU's Emily Tuchscherer to a third set before succumbing.
The Falcons will close the regular-season schedule with a Saturday (April 17) match at Ball State. Then, BGSU will prepare for the Mid-American Conference Championships, which will be held in DeKalb, Ill., from April 22-25.
