Falcons Fall To Northern Illinois, 7-0

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team finally got to play a match at the team's home court. However, Northern Illinois University spoiled the homecoming with a 7-0 win over the Falcons in Mid-American Conference dual-match play Saturday (April 3).
With the win, the Huskies improve to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the MAC, while the Falcons fall to 9-9 and 3-3, respectively.
Northern swept the three doubles matches to pick up the initial point, then swept the six singles matches. At the top doubles flight, NIU's Ivonne Andrade and Branka Savic captured an 8-3 win over BGSU's tandem of seniors Jessica Johnson and Lisa Maloney.
At the middle flight, the Huskies' Cassie Drake/Karrie Tyioran duo was victorious over junior Cameron Benjamin and freshman Ashley Jakupcin. Falcon sophomores Heidi Romer and Andrea Meister suffered a narrow, 8-6 loss to the NIU team of Megan Brooks and Kristi McIntyre.
In singles play, Northern won all six matches, but the bottom three flights featured some narrow sets. At the fourth flight, Benjamin battled Andrade close before falling, 6-4 and 7-6. Meister lost by the identical scores to McIntyre at the fifth flight, with McIntyre claiming an 11-9 win in the second-set tiebreaker.
At the sixth level, Daniela Martinez outlasted Johnson by scores of 7-6, 2-6 and 1-0, with the third-set tiebreaker finishing in an 11-9 result. The sixth-flight match was the only one to go three sets.
The Falcons will look to rebound with a pair of MAC matches next weekend. BGSU will conclude the home schedule with a Friday (April 9) match vs. Miami and a Saturday (April 10) contest against Marshall. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts.
