Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University has announced the hiring of Fred Thompson as head men's soccer coach. Thompson will become the fourth head coach of the Falcons entering the 40th year of the program in 2004.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the tradition of Bowling Green soccer," said Thompson. "The thing that makes it exciting is the school and program that I am coming to.
"I look forward to continuing the tradition and success that has been established by Mickey Cochrane, Gary Palmisano and Mel Mahler."
Thompson comes to Bowling Green after serving the last two seasons as assistant coach at the University of Evansville of the Missouri Valley Conference.
"His wealth of experience in recruiting and coaching make him an excellent addition to our coaching staff, and will provide us the leadership needed to return our men's soccer program to a level of national prominence," said BGSU Director of Athletics Paul Krebs.
"We are looking for him making a significant impact on our soccer program."
Prior to Evansville, Thompson served as head coach at Bellevue (Wash.) Community College in 2000 and 2001, producing a 28-8-6 record and a league title. Thompson was the 2001 NWAACC Coach of the Year. He holds a USSF "A" coaching license and has served on the Washington State ODP staff as well as the Region II ODP staff.
Thompson played professionally for eight years as a defender for the Baltimore Blast of the MISL, Tacoma Stars of the MSL, and Sacramento Knights of the CISL. Thompson was the starting sweeper for the Jamaica National Team from 1988-90.
Thompson is a native of Jamaica who grew up in Mississauga, Ontario. He is a 1987 graduate of George Mason University with a degree in finance. He helped lead GMU to top-20 status in three of four years there.
Fred and his wife, Jill, will be moving soon to Bowling Green.
