Columbus, Ohio - Bowling Green was limited to two hits and one run at Ohio State and lost a 8-1 decision to the Buckeyes at Bill Davis Stadium. OSU broke open a 1-0 game with runs in each the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
OSU grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a two-out, RBI-single by Steve Caravati. The leftfielder struck again in the fifth inning when he gave OSU a 3-0 lead with a two-run home run, again with two outs.
BGSU first threatened in the second inning when Josh Stewart hit a one-out double down the left-field line and advanced to third base on a groundout by Jeff Warnock. However, Jimmy Lipari fouled out to end the inning.
Again the Falcons had a runner in scoring position in the third inning after Josh Dietz led off the frame with a walk and was advanced to second base with a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Wasserman. However, Eric Lawson flew out and David Barkholz struck out, leaving Dietz stranded at second base.
OSU built its lead to 4-0 with another run in the sixth inning before BGSU had another threat in the top of the seventh. Stewart reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third base on a single by Warnock to center field, and a walk to Lipari then loaded the bases with two outs for the Falcons. Dietz was pinch-hit for by left-handed hitting Steve Raszka who almost put BGSU on the board. His hard shot to first baseman Paul Farinacci careemed off his chest to second baseman Drew Anderson. Anderson then fired to pitcher Trey Fausnaugh covering first base for the third out of the inning.
BGSU finally had a runner cross the plate in the ninth inning when with the bases loaded reliever Brett Hatcher hit Lipari, scoring Reimold. The Falcons could score no more, though.
Tyler Johnson (4-2) suffered the loss, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out five. Matt Hundley pitched 1.1 innings of relief (one hit, one run, one strikeout) while Neil Schmitz and Alan Brech each saw time in the three-run eighth inning.
The Falcons fall to 22-12 overall while OSU improves to 20-17 overall. BGSU travels to IPFW for a four-game series this weekend, playing seven-inning doubleheaders on both Saturday, May 1, and Sunday, May 2.
