Toledo, Ohio - Toledo scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and held on to defeat Bowling Green at Carter Park on Saturday afternoon, 10-8. BGSU fought back from three different deficits and took the lead in the top of the eighth only to see the Rockets plate the deciding runs in the bottom of the inning.
For the second day in a row BGSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Both runs came in when David Barkholz hit a grounder to UT second baseman Matt Ruth who threw the ball away down the right-field line. Eric Lawson scored from third base and Nolan Reimold scored all the way from first base for the two-run lead.
UT then plated four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Two runs came in when Aaron Rouser laid down a bunt to third baseman Tyler Wasserman who threw the ball away into right field. UT added two more runs in the inning for a 4-2 lead over the Falcons.
BGSU narrowed its deficit to 4-3 with a run in the fourth inning thanks to fielder's choice by Wasserman that scored Lipari from third base. The Falcons then tied the game, 4-4, in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Reimold that brought home Jeff Warnock from third base.
The Rockets regained the lead in the sixth inning when Jarrod Resendez and Aaron Rouser hit back-to-back, two-out solo home runs off of starter Burke Badenhop to give the home team a 6-4 lead.
The Falcons roared right back to tie the game, 6-6, with two runs in the top of the seventh. Lawson led off the inning with a single to right field before Warnock drove him in with a double to left field. Warnock advanced to third base on a Josh Stewart groundout and Reimold brought him in with a single to left field, tying the game at 6-6.
UT took the lead back, 7-6, in the bottom of the seventh after Chris Arvay doubled and then scored when Lipari failed to field a Dan Stong grounder. However, BGSU fought back yet again and took an 8-7 lead in the eighth inning. Josh Dietz singled down the right-field line, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wasserman, and scored thanks to a double by Lawson down the left-field line. Then UT's fourth error of the game, this time by Arvay at shortstop, scored Lawson from third base and gave the Falcons a one-run lead.
Resendez tied the game with his second home run of the game, this time off of reliever Matt Hundley, in the bottom of the eighth inning. Then Dan Ruth doubled down the left-field line off of reliever Neil Schmitz to score the two go-ahead runs and make it a 10-8 game.
Barkholz led off the ninth with a walk, but one out later was thrown out at second base on a delayed steal attempt. Steve Raszka then grounded out to end the game.
Schmitz (3-4) suffered the loss while Raul Lopez (2-1) earned the win. Lawson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Warnock (2-for-4) and Barkholz (2-for-4) each had a pair of hits. Badenhop left the game with a one-run lead, pitching seven innings and giving up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
BGSU falls to 25-17 overall and 10-10 in the MAC. UT improves to 19-30 overall and 8-12 in the MAC.
The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday, May 16, at Carter Park with a 1 p.m. start.
