Toledo, Ohio - For the third-straight day Bowling Green jumped out to an early lead over host Toledo. This time, though, the Falcons continued the barrage of hits and runs and finished with a 15-5 victory over the Rockets on Sunday afternoon at Scott Park.
BGSU used three big innings to put UT away, scoring six runs in the third inning, four in the sixth inning, and four in the seventh inning. The Falcons pounded out 17 hits in the game, marking the seventh-straight game that they have collected double-digit hit totals in a contest.
Freshman Eric Lawson began his big day with a leadoff double to begin the game and later scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by Josh Stewart for a 1-0 Falcon lead.
BGSU opened things up in the third inning by plating six runs on six hits and one Rocket error. Mike Barnard began the inning with a double and came home on a single by Lawson for the first run in the inning. Another sacrifice fly by Stewart again scoring Lawson plated run number two of the inning. Nolan Reimold added an RBI-single, Jimmy Lipari knocked in a pair with a double, and Tyler Wasserman recorded an RBI-single to give BGSU a comfortable 7-0 lead after three innings.
Meanwhile, freshman Alan Brech was cruising on the mound for the Falcons. He faced the minimum through three innings and didn't allow a Rocket run until the fifth inning, cutting BGSU's lead to 7-1. The left-hander lasted seven innings and scattered five hits and allowed just one run with one walk and five strikeouts to improve his record to 2-0.
The Falcon bats kept connecting in the sixth inning, plating four runs on two hits and one UT error, and scoring another four times in the seventh inning thanks to five hits and one UT error.
Lawson finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs. He finished the three-game UT series with a .643 batting avg. (9-for-14) with nine runs scored, seven RBIs, two doubles and one home run.
Ten different Falcons collected at least one hit on Sunday. Joining Lawson with multiple hits were Reimold (2-for-5, 3 RBIs), Wasserman (3-for-4, 2 RBIs), and Barnard (2-for-4, three runs scored).
BGSU improves to 26-17 overall and 11-10 in the Mid-American Conference. UT drops to 19-31 and 8-13 in the MAC. With Northern Illinois getting swept at Miami this weekend, the Falcons and Huskies are tied for fourth place in the MAC West Division with 11-10 records. NIU hosts Toledo next weekend while BGSU hosts Western Michigan in the regular-season finale.
