Bowling Green, Ohio - Toledo plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning to go ahead of host Bowling Green and defeat the Falcons, 7-6, at Warren Steller Field. UT's Sean Dobson hit the go-ahead, two-run home run off of reliever Neil Schmitz in the eighth inning.
UT's three runs gave the visitors a 7-4 lead. However, BGSU came back and plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut its deficit to 7-6. After Tyler Wasserman led off with a walk, pinch-hitter Andy Hudak roped a double to left field. Kevin Longstreth entered as a pinch-runner for Hudak at second base. Eric Lawson drove home Wasserman with a single and Jeff Warnock brought home Longstreth with a single for a 7-6 game.
Neither team plated a run in the ninth, though, including BGSU which sent four batters to the plate.
UT got the early lead with an unearned run thanks to two Falcon errors in the first inning. BGSU bounced right back, though, with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Stewart had a groundout that scored Lawson and a wild pitch allowed Warnock to come home. Jimmy Lipari had a single that scored David Barkholz for a 3-1 lead.
The Rockets tied the score at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the second inning before the Falcons plated a run in the bottom of the second for a 4-3 edge. Stewart singled home Lawson, who had reached via a double.
UT tied the score with a run in the top of the sixth before plated the three go-ahead runs in the eighth inning.
BGSU used seven pitchers by design with Adam Gumpf, Greg Becker and Matt Hundley each pitching two innings apiece. Neil Schmitz (3-4) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on four hits while not recording an out in the eighth inning.
Derek Overcashier (1-2) picked up the win with Raul Lopez earning the save.
BGSU pounded out 15 hits, the eighth-straight game that the Falcons have recorded double-digit hit totals. Ten different Falcons recorded a hit.
Lawson led the Falcon hit parade by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to a season-high nine games. Nolan Reimold was 1-for-4 to move his streak to 10 games with a hit. Warnock, Barkholz and Lipari each had a pair of hits.
BGSU falls to 26-18 overall while UT is now 20-31 overall. The Falcons end their regular-season this weekend fighting for a spot in the Mid-American Conference postseason tournament. With a sweep of visiting Western Michigan this weekend (May 21-23) at Warren Steller Field, the Falcons would earn themselves a spot in the tourney. Friday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m. while Saturday's and Sunday's games will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday will be senior day for David Barkholz, Dino Cowell, Ryan Lindquist, Neil Schmitz, and Spencer Schmitz.
