The BGSU Men's soccer team reported today and will begin preseason play on Saturday Aug. 14th. The Falcons will welcome 11 newcomers this season and return nine letterwinners. This year the Falcons welcome head coach Fred Thompson from the University of Evansville. Thompson was the assistant coach at Evansville for two years before coming to BGSU. Thompson is the fourth head coach in BGSU Men's soccer 40-year history. Tony Economopoulos will return for his second year as assistant coach. The Falcons ended the 2003 season 8-9-5 overall and 2-3-1 in the MAC, placing them in 4th place. The Falcons, however, were able to advance to the MAC Championship for the third time in four years. Deryck Freudeman, P.J. Behan, and Nnamdi Ihemelu are the lone seniors followed up by eight juniors. Thompson said the focus during preseason will be "to find out what pieces we have and develop a cohesive unit." The Falcons will begin exhibition play on the road against Findlay on Aug. 21 and will then continue by hosting Defiance on Aug. 26. Regular season play for the Falcons will begin on Sept. 1 when they host Michigan State at 4 p.m. This year the Falcons will host the Kelme Classic on Sept. 4 and 5.
