MORGANTOWN, West Virginia - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team downed both High Point (3-0) and Robert Morris (3-1) Saturday afternoon in Morgantown, WV to begin the West Virginia Invitational. The two matches were the first two in over 22 years without head coach Denise Van De Walle patrolling the sidelines.
With no stats available at this time for the match with High Point due to technical errors (box score will be available Sunday), we move to game two versus Robert Morris.
In the win over Robert Morris, five separate Falcons recorded double-figure kills in the four-game match (27-30, 30-25, 30-20, 30-23). Freshman Stephanie Swiger led the team with 16 kills, followed by Taylor Twite (14) Maggie Karges (13), Emily Manser (12) and Melissa Mohr (11).
Helping to support a season high 74 kills as a team, was a season-best 62 assists for the senior setter Amber Mareski.
"I was very happy with the way Amber [Mareski] set for the entire match, said assistant coach Mark Hardaway, filling in for Denise Van De Walle, who remains in Greece with the National Sitting Team. "She really controlled the match very well."
On the defensive end, many of the same names appear. Karges had a career-high 22 digs, and recorded her first-career double-double. Manser finished with 17 digs and Mohr chipped in with 12.
One of the deciding factors for the match was the differential in serving. The Falcons landed 10 aces, with RMU only recording two. Manser had a career-high five service aces to lead the team.
"In the match with Robert Morris, I thought our serving game was outstanding," said Hardaway. "Emily Manser really got us going in game three, with seven or eight straight points. She really helped us control the match from there on."
Day two of the West Virginia Invitational will conclude Sunday afternoon with the Falcons facing the host school at 12:30 and Delaware State at 5:30.
