EVANSTON, Illinois -
The Bowling Green State University volleyball team suffered back-to-back three set losses Saturday evening to Northwestern and IPFW to conclude the final day of the NU Labor Day Invite, hosted by the Wildcats. Senior Taylor Twite, who combined for 22 kills on Saturday, led the Falcons.
In match one versus the host Wildcats, BGSU (0-3) may have been swept in three sets (28-30, 26-30, 17-30) but several Falcons had impressive showings.
Leading the way for the Brown & Orange was Taylor Twite, who posted 10 kills on 25 attacks, chipping in with a .250 hitting percentage.
Freshman Stephanie Swiger continued her hot start to the season with eight kills and no errors, with a team-leading .533 hitting percentage. She also added six digs.
On the defensive side of the ball senior Melissa Mohr and junior Emily Manser each had a team-high eight digs in the loss to Northwestern. Mohr also had a team-high three block-assists.
Match two of the NU Labor Day Open was much like the entire tournament for the Falcons. They came close in nearly every set, missing out on opportunities, continually falling short in every set.
IPFW may have swept BGSU (27-30, 24-30, 27-30), but the Falcons looked as if they may have regained their offense touch with an .271 hitting percentage for the entire match, compared to a .198 and a .150 in the previous two matches.
Twite had her second consecutive impressive match with a team-high 12 kills to go along with two block assists.
Swiger had her first career double-figure kill performance with 11, adding three digs and four block assists.
Mohr was the third Falcon in double figures with 10 kills, chipping in with a team-high five block-assists.
With the conclusion of the NU Labor Day Invite the Falcons will now return home to play host to Cleveland State on Wednesday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m.
Freshmen Debuts:
Stephanie Swiger had 27 kills, 14 digs and seven block-assists in the NU Labor Day Invite.
Maggie Karges had nine kills and 15 digs in the three matches.
Elizabeth Simon, the new Falcon libero had 15 digs through the weekend.
Notes:
• The last time the Falcons have entered a tournament and not walked away with at least one win was back in 1996, when BGSU lost to Tennessee, Virginia and Pittsburgh (Aug 31-Sept. 1)
• In fact, those three loses in 1996, were also the last time the Brown & Orange open a season at 0-3
