BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Athletic Department, on February 4 and 5, 2005, will be recognizing the women who participated in competitive sports at BGSU prior to receiving varsity status in 1977. These 800 athletes, who pioneered the way for today's women, will be awarded varsity letters for their accomplishments between the years of 1910-1977.
On Friday, February 4 at 6:30 p.m., the athletes will be guests of the BGSU Athletic Department at the banquet and awards ceremony in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. During the ceremony, the women whose leadership laid the foundation for today's Falcons will be recognized and congratulated.
"This event is going to honor to honor the pioneering women who participated in intercollegiate sports at BGSU," said committee chair Sue Hager. "It is a recognition of their endeavors to provide the foundation for today's athletes."
On Saturday, February 5, they will introduce the athletes and their coaches during the BGSU women's televised basketball game versus Ohio at 2:00 p.m. in Anderson Arena.
In the early years, BGSU women students, who participated in competitive sporting events most often made do without funding, quality facilities or equipment. They traveled without meal stipends or air-conditioned buses, played in front of no one and often their accomplishments went unnoticed. They were the leaders, paving the way for today's women athletes.
Bowling Green State University and its Athletic Department appreciate the efforts and achievements of these women and congratulate them with their varsity letters. These letters were earned several years ago, but are now being formally awarded.
Nearly 200 women from across the country have made plans to return to Bowling Green for this event. They bring with them their families and many great memories and an eagerness to reunite with their past teammates.
