TOLEDO, Ohio - Junior Andrea Meister rallied to win the final two sets of her singles match, lifting the Bowling Green State University tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Youngstown State University Sunday (Jan. 23). The non-conference match was held at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
With the victory, the Falcons finish the weekend with a 2-0 record, and BG improves to 3-0 in dual-match play in the 2004-05 season.
In addition to Meister, whose win came at the sixth flight, Ashley Jakupcin and Cemeron Benjamin also picked up singles wins for the Brown and Orange. Jakupcin won at the top flight, sweeping the Penguins' Karen Najbert, while Benjamin won a first-set tiebreaker en route to her fifth-flight sweep of Nicole Muzechuk.
BGSU swept the doubles point, winning all three matches in convincing fashion. The closest match came at the top flight, where Susie Schoenberger and Heidi Romer won an 8-4 contest over Najbert and Michelle Fuleky.
At the second flight, Jakupcin and Jenna Nussbaum won by an 8-3 count, while Meister and Andrea Volle lost only one game in their third-flight victory.
In singles, the Penguins won three of the first five matches that finished, tying the overall score at 3-3 with only Meister and YSU's Emily Thayer still on the court. Meister, who had lost her opening set by a 7-5 score, rallied to win the second set by the identical score, then captured a 6-1 third set to pick up a singles victory for herself and a match win for her team.
The Falcons return to action next weekend, heading to East Lansing for a Saturday (Jan. 29) match at Michigan State. Then, the Brown and Orange will return to Shadow Valley the following weekend to fact Butler (Feb. 5) and Indiana State (Feb. 6).
