BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head Coach Denise Van De Walle's 700th career match did not turn out as she had hoped with a 3-1 loss to MAC West-leading Eastern Michigan. Her overall record stands at 408-292 (.583). The Falcons drop to 11-9 overall and 4-4 in the conference after the defeat.
Senior Ashlei Nofzinger and redshirt freshman Kendra Halm continued to rack up kills with 12 and 14 respectively. Halm also compiled a team-high seven blocks in the contest.
The Falcons looked like a well-oiled machine early in the match, taking a 6-3 lead. However, Bowling Green could not overcome the seven-point Eastern Michigan run that followed the early Falcon advantage. Melissa Bartlett crushed the Falcons with six kills on seven swings in the 30-20 EMU win.
Bowling Green collapsed to a 6-0 deficit to begin game two and never recovered despite six kills by Nofzinger. The Falcons never got closer than five points while hitting .171 in the second game.
The Falcons came out of the locker room poised to make a comeback, jumping out to a 21-12 lead with Halm blasting six kills and recording three blocks. Unfortunately, the Eagles scrapped their way back into the match, slicing the Falcon lead to a lone point at 27-26. Bowling Green then regained their composure and a big kill by redshirt freshman Corrie Mills sent the match to game four.
It was Bowling Green's turn to fight from behind in game four, falling to a 22-14 disadvantage before slashing the lead to one at 27-26. The momentum however was not enough for the Falcons as Eastern Michigan took the next three points and the match.
The Brown and Orange will stick around next weekend for another pair of home matches at Anderson Arena. The Falcons will take on the same two MAC East foes they defeated on the road just a week ago in Akron and Buffalo. BGSU will host the Bulls on Friday at 7 PM.
