BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Although the Bowling Green State University Falcons (2-12-1, 0-5-0) fell 1-0 to the visiting Bearcats of the University of Cincinnati, coach Fred Thompson remained optimistic.
"We did a much better job this game staying in it mentally," said Thompson of his young Falcon team. "This is a much better Cincinnati team than last year's which beat us." A year ago the Falcons gave up six goals.
"I do not think we have played a team this athletic before," said Thompson. "They are bigger stronger and faster in almost every position. I do not think we played slow or didn't put in the effort, this team is known for its athleticism."
The Bearcats lone goal came at 53:17 when Kenny Anaba slipped one past keeper Paul Shoemaker who was back in goal after a two game hiatus. UC's Mike Dwyer and Omar Cummings, whom Thompson referred to as arguably the toughest forward currently playing in the NCAA, assisted Anaba's goal.
Shoemaker finished the game with five saves on six shots on goal.
The Orange and Brown were out shot by a deceiving 17:2 margin, yet few of the UC shots had the chance to pose any danger to the Falcons defense.
The Falcons will play their last non-conference road match when they take on the Leathernecks of Western Illinois. The Sunday match-up will kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
