Falcons Go 3-0 in Opening Round at Wilson/ITA Regional

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University tennis team began play on a successful note at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championship Thursday (Oct. 20). Seniors Heidi Romer and Andrea Meister and sophomore Jenna Nussbaum all won their first-round matches in the singles qualifying draw. The tournament, hosted by Michigan State University, runs through Tuesday (Oct. 25) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Nussbaum sailed through her match, winning in straight sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-0 over MSU's Marianne Eelens. Nussbaum's victory set up a second-round matchup with Ohio State's Angela DiPastina.
Romer also was a straight-sets winner, downing IPFW's Lisa Bartelheim, 6-4, 6-3. That put the senior into the second round against Jennifer Tan of UW-Green Bay.
Meister rebounded from a first-set loss to Toledo's Jenny Belsky, winning in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) to set up a second-round contest vs. Indiana's Sigrid Fischer.
Singles play in the qualifying draw was scheduled to continue Thursday evening.
Two Falcon doubles teams will begin play in the main draw on Friday (Oct. 21). The team of Romer and Meister will meet Alejandra Meza Cuadra and Shivani Dave' of Illinois, while Nussbaum and junior Ashley Jakupcin will face the Indiana State duo of Jennifer Migan and Joanne Schikerling.
Ashley Jakupcin is in the main draw for singles, and will begin play Saturday (Oct. 22).
The ITA Midwest Region Championship is one of 17 ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women across the country. A total of 64 players compete in the singles qualifying draw, with the top eight joining 56 other players in the main draw.
The doubles main draw is made up of 64 teams.
The singles finalists and winning doubles team at the Regional Championships earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship in Columbus, Ohio from Nov. 3-6.
