BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball squad evened their record at 8-8 with a thrilling win in Akron Friday night. Game two was an intense marathon as the Falcons fell 39-41, however that would be the only loss for the Falcons the rest of the night.
Four different Falcons reached double digit kills, including dominate play from sophomore Stephanie Swiger and senior Ashlei Nofzinger. Swiger swatted 12 kills with no errors (12-0-31) while "Noffy," as her teammates call her, hammered home 16 kills with a lone error (16-1-38). Senior Emily Manser also crushed the Zips, leading the team with a career-high 18 kills.
Game one was close throughout with neither team taking a lead larger than three points. With the score at 25-24, a block by Manser and Swiger gave the Falcons a two-point lead they would not relinquish. Manser finished off the opening stanza with a kill set up junior Chrissy Gothke.
No one had any idea what was about to happen in game two. After fighting off game point eight separate times, the Falcons finally slipped and lost game two 41-39.
Head Coach Denise Van De Walle and her staff must have said all the right things in the locker room after the difficult game two defeat because the Brown and Orange came out on all cylinders in game three. Nofzinger's six kills, including the final two points, jolted the Falcons to a 30-19 drubbing of Akron to take a 2-1 advantage. BGSU swung at a .348 pace in the third game.
Bowling Green saw their other senior step up and lead in game four when Manser's offensive attack smothered the Akron defense. After the epic game two, the Falcons were happy to finish off the Zips 30-26 in game four.
