SOUTH BEND, Indiana - The Bowling Green State University hockey team suffered a setback Thursday evening versus Notre Dame inside the Joyce Center. The Falcons gave up four power-play goals as well as one short-handed goal en route to a 9-4 loss.
Bowling Green (2-5-1, 2-3-1) got off to a fast start after senior Brett Pilkington recorded his first goal of the season at the 9:19 mark of the opening period to give BGSU a 1-0 lead. The forward skated in on a two-on-one, faked a pass to Mike Falk, then ripped a shot passed ND goaltender Jordan Pearce.
The Irish (2-5-0, 1-2-0) recorded the next four goals, three of them coming with the man advantage.
Sophomore Jonathan Matsumoto had a great individual effort to close out the scoring in the second stanza, when he fired a shot on net after stealing the puck away from an ND defender. He then picked up the rebound and hit the twine to get the Falcons within two at 4-2.
The Irish answered right back in the third with three more goals in the opening seven minutes to put the game out of reach.
Falk and sophomore Ben Geelan recorded their sixth and second goals of the season late in the third to close out the scoring, posting a final score of 9-4.
For the night BGSU had 33 shots compared to 28 for Notre Dame, while the Irish went 4-for-10 on the power play, while the Falcons were 2-for-7.
These same two teams will do it again at 7:35 in South Bend, Indiana.
