CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced its honorees for the Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Gary V. Palmisano Coach of the Year, as well as the selections to the All-MAC teams. Senior forward Omari Aldridge was the lone Falcon named to the All-MAC first team.
Aldridge, a three-year letterman for the Falcons, finished his career with 48 points (21g, 6a) in 58 starts. While representing the Orange and Brown, the British Columbia native saw action in every scheduled match.
Aldridge made his mark on the Falcons storied history when he scored his 11th goal of the season and tied three former Falcons for 8th place in the Single Season Goal Top Ten list. He is the first player since 1996 to break into the category. In addition, this goal came as his second game-winning goal and gave the Falcons their first MAC victory since the 2003 season.
The University, of Akron swept the specialty awards with Ross McKenzie and Evan Bush earning the Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nods. Head coach Ken Lolla earned the Gary V. Palmisano Coach of the Year award after leading the Zips to an undefeated MAC regular season championship. The Zips also placed a combine total of nine student-athletes on the All-MAC teams.
Second seed Northern Illinois landed tabbed five selections to the first and second teams whiles the University at Buffalo contributed three. The Broncos of Western Michigan added four to the second-team.
The awards were selected as voted by the conference's head coaches.
The MAC Championship semifinals will take place at Lee Jackson Field on the University of Akron campus starting at 5 p.m. tonight when No. 3 Buffalo takes on No. 2 Northern Illinois. Top-seeded Akron will face No. 4 Western Michigan at 7:30 p.m. The winners will play for the MAC Championship at 2 p.m. The Championship game will be televised live on Comcast Local and Fox Sports Net Ohio.
