DETROIT, Mich. - A few quotes from Bowling Green State Universitiy women's basketball coach Curt Miller after the Falcons posted a 78-67 win at Detroit Wednesday night (Nov. 30) at UDM's Calihan Hall ...
"This is a big win for us. (While scouting Detroit) on tape, we realized that this is the toughest team we have played so far. They create such matchup problems, because they are willing to play five guards and they are a motion team. So, you never see the same set twice. They're senior-laden, and you can see that their kids have that sense of urgency that seniors get. I am very pleased to pull out a hard-fought win. After their big run, we didn't fold, and we fought very hard in the last seven minutes."
(On BGSU's success in the paint)
"Detroit has tremendous ball pressure, so it isn't easy to run your offense. But, they switch screens, and you have matchup advantages. If you're able to handle their ball pressure, you can pound the ball inside against mismatches. But, to their credit, they won some of those battles, and we couldn't get it in there. When we could handle the ball pressure, we were able to create some matchups that we wanted, and we did a good job of getting the ball inside. That was something we emphasized all week in practice, and I was pleased that we were able to get the ball in there to our post players."
(On BG's balanced scoring)
"I don't think one particular player played a fantastic game, but I thought they all stepped up in segments of the game, showing our depth and why I think we are a tough matchup. We usually have five people on the floor that can score, and -- even though we didn't get a lot of points from our bench -- our bench players really helped tonight, during some stretches of foul trouble. They gave us some steady, hard play and bided some time for the starters. It may not show on the stat sheet, but I think our bench was a big contributing factor to this win."
"I really respect the way Detroit plays. Even though they are off to a 1-4 start, this is a very hard-fought win, and I'm really proud of our kids. We could have folded in the last seven minutes, after they made that big run on us. This team hates to lose. I've got a core group that absolutely hates to lose. When it got tough, they bonded together and wanted to do anything they could to win. As a coach, it is a dream to have players who want to win with such a passion. That goes a long way, more than X's and O's."
