BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team scored the final two goals on Saturday night to upset #12 St. Lawrence 6-4 inside the BGSU Ice Arena. Sophomore Derek Whitmore tied his career-high with two goals in the win.
"That' s really a big win for our team," said head coach Scott Paluch. "I liked the way we competed all the way through the game. We did OK with that. We got ourselves in trouble a few times against their pressure, but we were able to handle things. With the fact it was just yesterday (that BG blew a 3-0 lead to Clarkson), it wasn't so much that feeling of here we go again as it was what do we need to do to combat it more. We had a terrific forecheck to get a turnover goal to get the lead back up to 4-2. We just had a real poor start to the power play (that led to SLU's third goal) that was a tough way to start the third period. I liked the way we stayed with it after they tied the game. Johnny Horrell was outstanding. He made some real big saves when it was 4-4 and then we get the face-off goal to win it. Svendsen ... He's an extremely tough courageous kid and you can see it in the way he plays. He had an outstanding weekend all around."
The game, which was much like last night's action with Clarkson saw the Falcons get out to an early lead, this time, taking a 2-0 advantage into the locker room after one period. Mike Falk recorded his 11th goal of the season after sophomore Alex Foster won the face-off directly to classmate Jonathan Matsumoto, who found Falk all alone in front of the SLU goal. The senior roofed the puck past goaltender Justin Pesony.
BGSU's second goal came off a John Mazzei blast from the point. Whitmore picked up the rebound along the left post, finding just enough room to squeeze the puck past Pesony for a 2-0 Falcon lead.
St. Lawrence got the next two goals to knot the score at two apiece, scoring at the 2:55 and 6:52 mark of the second period, but freshman Brandon Svendsen regained the lead for the Falcons just four minutes later.

BGSU regained the two-goal advantage just 1:01 later as Matsumoto crossed the blueline and wristed a shot off the crossbar and in for a 4-2 Orange and Brown lead.
The Saints once again erased a two-goal deficit with goals coming from TJ Trevelyan and Mark Wallman, just six minutes into the final period. Trevelyan recorded a hat trick on the night.
But the Falcons would not go quietly. Senior Captain Don Morrison gave the Falcons the lead for good as he fired a shot from the point through several defenders for a 5-4 BGSU advantage. For the weekend Morrison recorded two goals and two assists.
Whitmore capped the Falcon scoring outburst with a goal at the 19:57 mark, skating in all alone and slipping the puck past the SLU goaltender for the final 6-4 score.

Not to be outdone, senior netminder Jon Horrell was outstanding. For the night he turned away 35-of-39 Saint shot attempts and has stopped 71-of-78 shots in his last two starts (.910 save percentage).
BGSU was 2-for-6 on the night with the man advantage, while SLU was held in check, going 1-for-5. Over the weekend the BGSU power play was 4-for-15 (.267) after scoring only five goals in their last 50 tries (.100) in the previous seven games.
The Falcon hockey team will have the next 19 days off before traveling to Storrs, Conn., for the UConn Classic (Dec. 29-30). The next Falcon home game is set for Jan. 3, 2006, as the Falcons will play host to Colgate.
