CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University junior Liz Vrabel has been named a Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon (Feb. 28). Vrabel earns the honor for the first time this season and the fourth time in her Falcon career.
Vrabel, a native of Allison Park, Pa. (North Allegheny HS), had a record of 0-2 and an earned-run average of 2.80 at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn., last weekend. Vrabel appeared in four games, making two starts, with her weekend including a 10-inning complete game in the Falcons' 1-0 loss to Kentucky Sunday (Feb. 27). In that game, Vrabel allowed only six hits and an unearned run.
On the weekend, Vrabel walked four batters and had 13 strikeouts in 20 total innings of work.
Vrabel was named the league pitcher of the week for the West Division. Kelly Drozd of Northern Illinois was the division's player of the week, while Akron's Kelly Quigley and Miami's Courtney Salmon earned player- and pitcher-of-the-week honors, respectively, for the East Division.
The Falcons, 0-6 on the year, return to action this weekend. BGSU will head to Fullerton, Calif., for the Worth Invitational. BG's five games in that tournament will begin Friday (March 4), with contests vs. Minnesota and Pacific. The Falcons also face Cal State Fullerton, Nevada and Northwestern in that tourney.
