TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team avenged a loss from last season and improved to 5-1 this season, with a 6-1 victory over Indiana State University Sunday (Feb. 6). The non-confernce match was held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
The Sycamores picked up victories at the top flight in both singles and doubles, but BGSU won at every other flight to earn the match victory. ISU had downed BG, 4-3, last Feb. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind.
On Sunday, ISU's top doubles team picked up a win, but the Falcons triumphed at the other two flights to take the doubles point. Sophomore Ashley Jakupcin teamed with freshman Jenna Nussbaum for an 8-3 win at the second flight, while the Falcons' other freshman, Andrea Volle, combined with junior Andrea Meister for an 8-2 win at flight number three.
In singles play, ISU's Jennifer Migan was able to top senior Susie Schoenberger at the #1 flight. The two split their first two matches, before Migan picked up a win in the 'super tiebreaker.' That, however, would be the only singles match that went the Sycamores' way.
Jakupcin took care of Joanne Schickerling in straight sets at the second flight, while Volle downed Marie Caujolle in two sets, including a second-set tiebreaker, at the third flight.
Nussbaum won her first three games before her opponent, Magda Faferek, was forced to retire due to injury. Junior Heidi Romer and Meister got straight-set victories at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively, with Meister losing a total of only three games in her victory.
The Falcons will play the next four matches away from home, including two next weekend. Penny Dean's team will head to the Windy City to take on UIC Saturday (Feb. 12) and DePaul Sunday (Feb. 13). The following weekend, BG will head to Milwaukee, Wis., facing Iowa and Marquette.
The Falcons' next match in Northwest Ohio is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 25, vs. Cincinnati. That match will begin a stretch of eight consecutive home matches which will take the team into early April.
